What is a PIN?

A PIN (Personal Identification Number) is a personal identification code that enables users to access INPS online services.

Thanks to this recognition system, every user can access the services relevant to him or her.

From 1 October 2021, INPS will issue the PIN as a credential for access to services only to citizens resident abroad who do not hold an Italian identity document.

The standard PIN and device PIN

The PIN can be either a standard PIN which is used to view information on your contribution status or pension, or a device PIN which is used for requesting the services and economic benefits to which you are entitled. The device pin was introduced to give greater security to the identity of the applicant: to obtain it, you can submit, either online or by fax, the relevant claim form which can be downloaded from the Online Pin Claim service > Do you want a device PIN? The form must be filled in and accompanied by a copy of your identity document. Alternatively, you can go to an INPS office in person by booking access to the Fast Counter, either using the INPS offices service, through the "Office Counters" feature of the INPS Mobile app, or by calling the Contact Centre on (+39) 803164 from a landline (free of charge) or (+39) 06164164 from a mobile phone (charged at your standard mobile rate). The service is available from Monday to Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m..

With a standard PIN, however, it is also possible to submit a claim for a benefit to avoid any time limits. The claim can only be processed once the user has converted the standard PIN to a device PIN.

The initial PIN consists of 16 characters. The first time a user logs in using this PIN, a wizard assigns them an eight-character PIN with which they can subsequently access the services.

Who can claim a PIN

Only residents abroad that do not have identity documents issued in Italy can request a PIN using the "On-Line PIN claim" function of the online PIN service.

Telephone PIN

Users who access INPS services using their SPID, CNS or CIE credentials, in order to benefit from the support of Contact Centre operators in accessing online services, can obtain a temporary telephone PIN. By accessing the MyINPS area with your credentials, you can use the “telephone PIN” feature to generate a temporary PIN, which can be valid for one day, one week, one month or three months.

Credentials to access INPS online services: SPID, CNS and CIE.

Citizens can also access online services using second-level SPID, with the Electronic Identity Card (CIE) or by using the National services Card (CNS).

Delegation of digital identity

Citizens who are unable to use INPS online services independently may delegate a trusted person to exercise their rights in relation with the Institute.

INPS Circular No. 127 of 12 August 2021 provides all the useful indications for issuing delegations to access online services.
