Social pension

The social pension is a welfare service for which no insurance or contribution requirements were required.

It continues to be paid to those who have applied and met the requirements by 31 December 1995. From 1 January 1996, it was replaced by the social allowance.

The right to social pension was recognised to Italian citizens and to citizens of EU member states of 65 years of age, who met certain income and residence requirements.

START DATE AND DURATION

The social pension is paid from the first day of the month following the submission of the claim.

WHAT AM I ENTITLED TO?

The amount is determined annually in relation to the percentage increase in pensions, established by ministerial decree.

In relation to the extent of personal and/or marital income, the social pension can be paid in full or in part.

WITHDRAWAL OF BENEFIT

If the citizenship and residence requirements are not met, the right to a social pension is lost.

REQUIREMENTS

To claim for a social pension, the applicant must be an Italian or European Union citizen, over 65, and to reside regularly in Italy. Furthermore, the applicant must lack any income or collect income below the limits established by law.

From 1 January 1996, the social pension has been replaced by the social allowance.
